Literacy Adaptations for Students who are Deafblind

This presentation focuses on the various literacy adaptations, accommodations, and strategies used in classrooms for children who are deafblind. Sectioned off into four categories, the presenters will focus on the types of vision loss (total blindness, low vision, CVI) and the use of the appropriate materials.

Literacy formats will include story boxes with concrete objects, tactile books, and additional accommodations and strategies. A multitude of examples of created materials will be displayed, as well as creation tips for the audience to take away to their designated area of focus.

Learning Goals and Objectives

Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Apply literacy in educational programming to diverse learners.
  • Define literacy for broader environments (all encompassing).
  • Create individualized materials to meet the needs of children with dual sensory loss.

 

PRESENTERS SUMMARY:
Each of our webinar presenters holds a Masters degree in Severe Special Education and Deafblindness from Boston College.

For more than ten years, Marguerite Bilms has worked with a wide range of individuals who are deafblind both as a teacher at Perkins and a volunteer at the Helen Keller Center on Long Island, New York. She is currently teaching a preschool class of deafblind learners.

Megan Connaughton specializes in working with young learners who face multiple physical and medical challenges as well as being deafblind. She is currently teaching a classroom of early elementary students who are deafblind.

Christa Hulburt received the Bernard A. Stotsky/Thomas H. Browne prize for Excellence in Special Education in 2013. Her primary areas of interest are in behavior management, and enhancing communication skills for students with severe disabilities. She currently teaches a classroom of Kindergarten and first grade-aged learners who are deafblind.

Ira Padhye has been a teacher at Perkins for the past two years, and is currently teaching a class of middle school-aged students who are deafblind.
