Common Core State Standards: Challenges for Teachers of Students who are Visually Impaired

This session examines the elements that make the Common Core State Standards different from previous state standards, and the challenges they present for students with visual impairments. Participants will learn to identify key differences between Math and Language Arts standards, and gain valuable resources on student assessments under the new standards.

In addition, this webinar provides resources to help learn about and implement the new CCSS standards.

Learning Goals and Objectives

Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to:

Examine how the standard is written and discuss what each section means.
Discuss the difference between the Math and ELA standards.
Discuss the role of the TVI when working with students who are visually impaired in this new conceptual framework of the CCSS; and special challenges when working with students with both visual and multiple impairments.
Discuss of student assessment under the new standards.

PRESENTER SUMMARY:
Tara Mason is a Ph.D. Candidate in Special Education at Texas Tech University specializing in visual impairment and assistive technology. She serves as a university supervisor of TVI Candidates in several states for TTU, as a teaching assistant for graduate level courses, and as a researcher on projects related to visual impairment. Additionally, Tara works with Perkins School for the Blind on a Gates Foundation grant funded project regarding the Math Common Core State Standards. She was previously employed as a TVI at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired for several years.
