Welcoming Students is made up of 4 modules, each containing a lecture, video segments, readings, and assigned activities to enhance and apply your learning. Students are expected to be familiar with all material presented in the workshop and to submit all assignments where indicated.

Course Objectives

Participants will:

  • Examine the nature of different types of Visual Impairment and the impact on the student’s life at school.
  • Identify areas of need in Social Skills development, and create positive solutions for students with visual impairment.
  • Describe fundamental Orientation and Mobility skills and techniques, and apply them to their student’s school situation.
  • Find and identify resources, adaptations, and techniques for giving students with Low Vision access to the curriculum at school.
  • Upon successful completion of the course, you will earn 20 ACVREP, CTLE credits, or Continuing Education credits (your choice) and be eligible to receive a certificate demonstrating that you earned the credits. In addition, Perkins will send you a letter confirming that the credits have been awarded.
  • When we have received your registration, you will be enrolled in the workshop and notified with your username and login. Perkins eLearning profiles are unique to the learning platform, and separate from any other username/password you have with Perkins. If you already have an eLearning profile, you will see the title “Welcoming” appear under “My Workshops” when you login to www.perkinselearning.org/workshops
  • All submitted material is reviewed by a member of the Perkins eLearning staff and is evaluated as having met the assignment requirements. Assignments are not individually evaluated or graded. Submitted assignments are not returned.
  • Assignments and assessments are evaluated on a Pass/Fail scale, and all requirements must be met to receive credits. There is no time limit to completing a Perkins Self-Paced Course. The lesson plan structure is suggested as the best approach to the material.

A structure is suggested for you, through the syllabus and the eLearning environment. Plan to spend 1 week working through each module. While this is a self-paced course, the material will have the most impact if you work steadily through the outline in the order it is presented. You may complete and submit the assignments in any order.

This is a web-based, self-guided professional development activity for Orientation & Mobility Instructors, Parents, TVIs. ACVREP has approved this course for Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialists for People with Visual Impairments (CATIS).
