Teaching Strategies for Students Who Are Visually Impaired with Additional Disabilities Including Deafblindness

This training module includes eight webcasts and their corresponding reading material, which demonstrate a wide range of teaching strategies used to provide effective instruction to students with visual impairments and additional disabilities. Participants will earn 10.0 Professional Development Points, ACVREP, CTLE, or Continuing Education credits by viewing 8 designated videos and taking an online quiz.

By registering for Professional Development Points, ACVREP, CTLE, or Continuing Education credits, you will be provided with a self-paced tutorial using video clips and other resources related to this topic, as well as an online test to assess your knowledge.

This is a web-based, self-guided professional development activity for TVIs, VRTs, O&Ms, Parents, Teachers of the Deafblind or Severely Impaired, and Rehabilitation Specialists.

Learning Goals and Objectives

Participants will learn:

  • The characteristic features of CHARGE Syndrome.
  • The physical, neurological and sensory issues shared by many children with CHARGE Syndrome.
  • Strategies for creating an effective learning environment for children with CHARGE Syndrome.
  • Strategies for having conversations with individuals who are visually impaired with additional disabilities.
  • Strategies for developing literacy-based materials accessible for students with deafblindness or visually impaired with additional disabilities.
  • The critical role the hands have in interacting with individuals who are deafblind or visually impaired with additional disabilities.
  • How to develop a portfolio that demonstrates an individuals communication skills, abilities, and challenges.
  • How to develop a vocational portfolio as a tool for transition to adult life.
