The Role of the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments with Students who have Multiple Disabilities (Keys 2)

There are 3 sessions included in this training module that describe best practices for serving students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities, including the role & function of the TVI, effective service delivery models for serving students with visual impairments & multiple disabilities, and strategies for promoting quality assessment & instruction.

Participants will earn 15 ACVREP credits, 15 CTLE credits, or 15 PDP/CE credits by viewing the video presentations and lectures, and completing the assignments.

A structure is suggested for you, through the syllabus and the eLearning environment. Plan to spend 1 week working through each module. While this is a self-paced course, the material will have the most impact if you work steadily through the outline in the order it is presented. You may complete and submit the assignments in any order.   The tutorial uses the text, Keys to Educational Success: Teaching Students with Visual Impairments and Multiple Disabilities, which is available from AFB Press.

Learning Goals and Objectives

Participants will:

  • The participant will identify the knowledge and skills required by a TVI in both public and private school environments.
  • The participant will identify the knowledge and skills required by a TVI as a general education teacher in a specialized school setting for students with visual impairments.
  • The student will identify a variety of team models & the roles & responsibilities of each team member. The participant will identify a variety of educational settings in which services can be provided by a TVI to students with visual impairments & multiple disabilities.
  • The participant will identify the methods by which instruction can be delivered by a TVI in a general education setting for students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities.
  • The participant will identify the method by which services are provided to students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities in specialized school settings.
  • The participant will identify guidelines and assessments to determine the quantity of services provided to students with visual impairments & multiple disabilities. The participant will identify his/her role in performing, environmental, functional vision, and developmental assessments for students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities.
  • The participant will identify strategies for developing IEP goals as part of the educational team.
  • The participant will identify his/her role in providing instruction to students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities in general education and specialized school contexts.
  • The participant will identify strategies to promote effective collaboration between the TVI and the educational team.
  • Upon successful completion of the test, you will earn 15 ACVREP, CTLE credits, or Continuing Education credits (your choice) and be eligible to receive a certificate demonstrating that you earned the credits. In addition, Perkins will send you a letter confirming that the credits have been awarded.
  • Instructions on how to enroll in the tutorial and take the online test will be emailed to you after you have successfully registered. Perkins eLearning profiles are unique to the learning platform, and separate from any other username/password you have with Perkins. If you already have a user profile for the learning platform, you will use that existing profile to access the tutorial.
  • All submitted material is reviewed by a member of the Perkins eLearning staff and is evaluated as having met the assignment requirements. Assignments are not individually evaluated or graded. Submitted assignments are not returned.
  • Assignments and assessments are evaluated on a Pass/Fail scale, and all requirements must be met to receive credits. There is no time limit to completing a Perkins Self-Paced Course. The lesson plan structure is suggested as the best approach to the material.
