Cody went to Sheetz: iBook

A high school student with traumatic brain injury creates an iBook to remember his route around a store.

Cody, a high school student with traumatic brain injury (TBI), uses an iBook to retell his Sheetz Gas Station O&M lesson.  One of Cody’s IEP goals is to be able to retell an event in order with details.  Cody has been using the Memo app on his O&M instructor’s iPhone to answer the “WH” questions:  Who, What, When, Where, What and Why.  After each lesson, he records his answers.  Initially, his O&M instructor asked the question and Cody responded in one or two word phrases.  With prompts to “make a sentence” and after sentences where modeled for him, Cody began using complete sentences and often initiated the question!  Cody’s O&M instructor created O&M books using iBooks Author app (only available on Mac computers) to create accessible iBooks.

Cody’s family frequently goes to Sheetz Gas Station and often purchases snacks.  Cody is very familiar with this store and gave his O&M instructor a guided tour.  Cody demonstrated the O&M technique of “self-familiarization” – learning the perimeter of the store first.  Cody’s picture was taken at the main areas around the perimeter of the store and the iBook was created following the same sequence.  This iBook helped Cody to remember the route around the store including the sequence of these main areas.  Cody provided the sentence below each picture.

Even though this activity was geared to helping Cody remember his O&M route at Sheetz, the activity clearly incorporated many academic skills as well.

Note: When “reading” his iBook, Cody uses both his vision to identify the picture (which prompts him to remember the sentence) and VoiceOver to listen to his sentences.

For more information about Cody using iBooks for O&M purposes and to view the iBook, go to: Cody’s O&M Adventures: iBook post  and Cody’s Favorite LOGOs: iBook post.

Learning to retell O&M lessons was one activity/learning tool for Cody.  For more information about activities and sequences of his visual processing, retelling stories, and other functional daily living skills, see Cody:  Learning Life Skills post.
