Exploring the Juliet 120: Communications and User Settings

In part one of this series, we focused on getting started with The Juliet 120 from Enabling Technologies  with a focus on orientation and the Direct Braille function. In Part 2, we explored the menu and settings in greater detail and explored printing options. In Part 3, we highlighted the braille layout settings. And in this article, we will finish our walkthrough of the settings menu.

Menu Keys - A Review

The menu button (labeled in braille on the machine) is used in conjunction with the navigation “cross”, which contains up, down, left and right navigation keys as well as an OK/Confirm button in the middle.

  • Arrow Up: Moves to the next menu item
  • Arrow Down: Moves to the next menu item
  • Arrow Left: Moves to a higher menu level OR to a previous step within a wizard
  • Arrow Right: Moves to a lower menu level OR to a next step within a wizard
  • OK: Confirms selection

Please refer to the Menus Settings and Options article (part 2 in this series)for further review.

Menu Structure - The Branches

As you may recall, we have been referring to the options in the menu as “branches”, each with its own offshoots and settings. The following are the five “branches”

  • Print
  • Braille Layout
  • Communication
  • User Service
  • Protected Service

As previously mentioned, we covered the Print Branch in part two of this series. So let’s move forward into the next branch.

The Communication Branch

As with other branches in previous articles, there are several submenus (sub-branches) and functions for setting up communications. You can access these submenus by pressing the right and left arrow keys on the navigation cross.

Please note that to get to the communications branch, you must continue to press the down arrow until the unit says “communications” after pressing the menu key.

After the Juliet 120 says the words “communications”, each time you press arrows, you will move among the submenus in that branch. The right arrow will move you to the next item. If you press the left arrow, you will move to the previous item.

To choose levels or options below the submenu, you will again use the up/down navigation keys. Once you hear the option you want to select, press the OK/Confirm button

Below are the submenu items under the Communications Branch:

  • USB Memory
  • Manage WiFi Network
  • Wizard for Wired Network
  • Speech Feedback

Let’s take a look at each of these submenus

USB Memory

As we have seen in previous articles, there are many ways use of a USB is useful with the Juliet. It can be used to emboss direct braille, install updates, or backup settings.

If you wish to safely remove the USB memory, much like you would in a computer, you would need to access this setting. The only real option under this sub-branch is “press OK to safely remove USB memory”. Removing the USB in this way helps to ensure that files are saved uncorrupted on the USB drive.

Manage WiFi Network

Connecting your Juliet 120 to a WiFi network has a number of advantages. It enables you to directly emboss from other devices, such as a laptop or smartphone, that are also connected to the same WiFi network.

Current WiFi Network

Obviously, this option will tell you if you are connected to WiFi and what the network name is.

List Known WiFi Networks

When this option is selected, the Juliet 120 will provide a list of known WiFi networks and allow you to connect to each

List WiFi Networks Supporting WPS

In other words, this option will provide you with secure wifi networks that meet a particular technical security standard. It will tell you which networks in range provide that extra layer of security.

List all WiFi Networks

This last setting will list all WiFi networks in range, regardless of the security protocols in place.

Wizard for Wired Network

This setting allows you to enter the Wired Network Wizard. We won’t address this setting in great detail since there are few instances when most users will need to add an embosser to a wired network. Most of the time, this is a setting that is used in schools for businesses to allow the embosser to be available on a network server. Contact your network specialist for help with this setup option. You may need to help the, so please see the previous article’s heading on navigating wizards.

Speech Feedback

This setting is pretty self-explanatory. It allows the user to adjust two different speech settings

Select Volume

With this setting, you can choose among low, medium, and high for the embosser’s output volume. Note that you cannot completely disengage speech because the unit depends on that function for the user to interact with it.  After all, there is no screen on the Juliet 120.

Select Language

You may select among some pre-installed language profiles for the speech output of the embosser. Please note that this ONLY applies to the speech output and not the translation table of the embosser.

The User Service Branch

The User Service Branch is mainly comprised of settings that did not apply to the other branches we discussed.

  • Insert Transport Locking Wizard
  • Printing Speed
  • Paper Out Settings
  • Firmware Upgrade
  • Backup Settings
  • Restore Settings

Transport Locking Wizard

When you turned on the Juliet for the very first time, you should have automatically been directed to the “transport unlocking wizard”, which walked you through unlocking the transport bar in the back of the unit. This wizard walks you through inserting this bar if you need to ship the unit back to the factory or transport it to another location.

Printing Speed

The speed of the embosser can be controlled using this setting. Speeds can be selected from a list.

Paper Out Settings

Once embossing is complete, this option allows you to select what the embosser will do.  It can either eject the paper to where you can manually tear it off, indicate you have a paper cutter attached to the hood (in cases when tractor fed paper is not separated into sheets), or have the embosser head remain where it is when the embosser finishes. Generally, the Juliet defaults to the first option.

Firmware Upgrade

In this menu, you may choose to either check a USB drive for an update (the update must be downloaded from the Humanware website) or you may check online for updates if you embosser is connected to the internet.

Backup Settings

The Juliet 120 allows you to back up settings to a USB drive.

Restore Settings

This setting restores settings you’ve backed up from a USB drive.

The Protected Service Branch

This branch allows access to the following areas and features:

  • Command Center
  • Production Test Wizard
  • Recovery
  • Remote Support

We will not be going into detail on this branch, other than to state it is here. These settings are generally not adjusted by the majority of users nor are they needed. If you do need to access these settings, chances are you are having issues with your embosser or may need advanced options. In this case, you may be in contact with customer support.
