Apple Care Warranty

A walk through of Apple Care policies.

Oh no! Your charger broke! What do you do? You could by a new one, use one that’s lying around, or request a new one from a warranty provider. Instead of going with a third party service, I choose to use the AppleCare warranty. You might ask why I spend the extra to use the company warranty versus cheaper outlets. In this post, I am going to break down exactly why I chose this service versus competitors.

I want to start off by saying that I DO NOT work for Apple I am giving the facts and my honest opinion on the service. I have used this service for 3 years now on every Apple product I use and the results are the same. (I have serviced 2 iPod Touches (5th gens), iPhone 5, 2 iPhone 6, iPad Mini (1st Gen), iPad (4th Gen), and a 2012 MacBook Pro all owned by various members of my family).

The service I use most would probably have to be the cable replacement service. I have had to replace my lightning chargers ($20) and EarPods ($30) (iPods and iPhones only) many times. With this service, Apple gives you unlimited replacements of these cables, and if you have to have it shipped, that is covered by the prepaid label which is included with the replacement part. All you have to do is return the defective cable, and Apple will give you a brand new cable. If I had to total all the replacements of my iPod Touch alone, it would most likely go as high as $200+ in replacements! I only spent $70 on the warranty which covered me for two years.

Another service this warranty provides is unlimited battery replacements. The reason for this is because over time, the battery in your device deteriorates and becomes less capable of holding a charge. Thus, this service is a really great aspect of the warranty. I personally haven’t had to do this because I follow all the guidelines by not exposing my device to hot temperatures (90 degrees or above) or cold temperatures (32 degrees or below) for long periods of time.

Let us say your built in microphone stops working. I have had my home button go bad as well as well as the microphone. No questions asked, Apple replaced the device entirely! They will replace it with a new device or a certified refurbished unit.

There are some limitations however. If it is accidental damage, then that is not covered by the warranty. You are able to pay a reduced sum in order for it to be repaired as compared to paying a higher rate, receiving the same service. Besides this, the service is great and reasonably priced in my opinion.

The process to resolving your issues is one phone call away 1-800-MYAPPLE (692-7753). You will be asked for your serial number (iPods and iPads) or your IMEI number (iPhone only). You can find these numbers by going to Settings à General à About, and you should be able to find it near the bottom of the page. Once you give the automated system your information, you will be directed to a representative who can assist you. I have been really pleased with the service I have received as well as the polite representatives I have worked with. You can find out more information about the program by going to Apple’s website.

*Some services such as cable replacement may require you to put a hold on your credit card, but once Apple receives the original part in the mail, you will be credited the amount you had to put on hold. This is just a precaution to ensure that they receive the defective part, and a user is not just abusing the service to get free cables, and perhaps sell them.

So is this a service you would consider purchasing? Is it worth the extra? Is there anything better available? Feel free to leave your comments!
