Sexuality Topics and Intervention Strategies: Taking care of personal needs for individuals who are visually impaired

This tutorial discusses intervention for physical examinations, identifying body parts, teaching modesty, showering, menstruation.

This tutorial addresses sexuality issues among children and young adults who are visually impaired and/or blind. It will include the need to establish early appropriate social and safe behaviors regarding the development of sexuality. Topics covered include prevention and intervention for physical examinations, identifying body parts, teaching modesty, showering, menstruation, masturbation, and additional resources.

This is not designed to discuss various sexual education programs, rather topics to consider prior to formalized sex education. Participants will earn 1.5 Professional Development Points, ACVREP, CTLE, or Continuing Education credits by completing an online quiz.

This is a web-based, self-guided professional development activity for TVIs, VRTs, O&Ms, Parents, Teachers of the Deafblind or Severely Impaired, and Rehabilitation Specialists. By registering for Professional Development Points, ACVREP, CTLE, or Continuing Education credits, you will be provided with a self-paced tutorial using video clips and other resources related to this topic, as well as an online test to assess your knowledge.

Learning Goals and Objectives
Participants will:

  • Obtain knowledge of various sexuality topics with a specific focus on adapting instruction for individuals who present with a vision loss.
  • Obtain a variety of intervention strategies for directly teaching topics such as, how to shower, appropriate masturbation, care for menstruation, and safety behaviors.
  • Build their “tool-kits” with a variety of resources directly targeting sexuality issues.

  • Upon successful completion of the test, you will earn 1.5 Professional Development Points, ACVREP, CTLE, or Continuing Education credits (your choice). You will be able to print a signed Perkins certificate demonstrating that you earned the credits.
