This activity has been revised and was originally created by Vickie Brennan, Flo Ryu and Dennis Lolli and published in the Perkins Activity and Resource Guide (1st edition, Volume 2 1992). The second edition is available for purchase.
For the student with some amount of vision, this activity works on visual discrimination skills. The ultimate goal is to have the student reach for or point to the requested object. Lessons include Concept Development and English Language Arts.

Present an object against a high contrast background (Big Bird puppet with black felt board positioned behind it).

Direct the student to reach for or wave to the item.

Gradually increase the background clutter and the number of objects (place pictures of other Sesame Street puppets on the felt board).

Direct the student to find herself or family members in a photograph.

Encourage the student to locate familiar items in magazines.

Encourage the student to scan and locate familiar objects or persons in indoor and outdoor environments.

Have the student pick out a particular doll or stuffed animal from a group.

Direct the student to find her own coat and hat from other items hanging on a wall.

Have the student pick out her own tricycle from those belonging to other neighbor children.
