Up and Down

Vary the tempo and dynamics to help students improve gross motor skills with song!

This activity has been revised and was originally created by Judith E. Bevans and published in the Perkins Activity and Resource Guide (1st edition, 1992).  The second edition is available for purchase.

The song “Up and Down” by Bill Janiak will help students improve their gross motor skills and follow directions. Lessons include English Language Arts, Social Skills, and Recreation and Leisure.

Piano, autoharp or guitar is recommended. If not available, shake or tap a tambourine.

Have the students sit on chairs. The teacher sings the song, which provides directions for movement.
